An Easy Valentine’s Sweet- Chocolate Heart Cookies

IMG_2319With Valentine’s Day on Sunday, I wanted to make something fun with the kids. My two toddlers were able to help add ingredients, roll the dough, and use the cookie cutters. They also loved decorating! I appreciated the fact that there aren’t too many ingredients and the dough does not need to be refrigerated.

Makes about 3 dozen cookies

*  1 cup salted butter

*  1 cup granulated sugar

*  1 large egg

*  2 tablespoons whipping cream

*  2 tablespoons vanilla extract

*  1 teaspoon almond extract

*  3 cups unbleached flour

*  1 ½ teaspoons baking power

*  ½ cup unsweetened cocoa

*  Melting chocolate (I found melting chocolate at Safeway and think it is in most grocery store baking aisles)

*  Sprinkles for decorating

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. In a mixer combine butter and sugar. Add egg, cream, vanilla, and almond extract all at once and thoroughly blend. In a separate bowl, stir together flour, baking powder, and unsweetened cocoa. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ones and blend. Roll out dough to a thickness of about 1/4 inch and cut out hearts with cookie cutter. Bake on a greased cookie sheet 8 to 12 minutes and cool on a rack. (Dough does not need to be chilled before using). When the cookies are cool, dip them into melted chocolate. I only dipped about 1/4 of the heart. Sprinkle the chocolate section with sprinkles, if desired. Place the  cookies on wax paper until the chocolate is completely set.

Now that you know what my family is giving as Valentines, what are you giving?
